We’ve teamed up with a wildlife group to teach Leighton Buzzard school children about swifts

22nd July 2022

We have teamed up with Bedfordshire Swift Group to teach Leighton Buzzard primary school children about swifts.

The key stage two children at Beaudesert Lower School, aged eight to 11, were visited by Erika Pratt, Education Coordinator at The Greensand Trust, and Bob Hook of Bedfordshire Swift Group. During the morning assembly, Erika and Bob delivered a talk on swifts, which included showing swift nest boxes and playing the bird’s call.

Alongside the talk, we have donated a swift nest box to the school, ready for when swifts return to the UK from their African wintering grounds in early May 2023.

We also have nest boxes installed at our Manor Heath development in Leighton Buzzard, encouraging swifts to migrate to the area.

Vanessa Pearce, Headteacher at Beaudesert Lower School, said: “Bedfordshire Swift Group were extremely knowledgeable, and provided the children with so many key facts that they weren’t previously aware of about swifts. The talk really captured the children’s interest, they’ve all been talking about swifts a lot since and are now really motivated to help swifts have more nesting sites both at home and at school.

“I’d like to thank Bedfordshire Swift Group and Mulberry Homes for delivering such a successful talk, and for providing us with our very own swift nest box.”

Mulberry Homes, said: “We are thrilled to have teamed up with Bedfordshire Swift Group, and arranged this exciting talk for the children of Beaudesert Lower School. We hope that the pupils had a wonderful time learning about swifts.

“Supporting local wildlife is one of our core values at Mulberry Homes. Leighton Buzzard has a great swift population, and we are very proud to have raised awareness of this species. We take a lot of pride in installing nest boxes at our developments, and are delighted to be sharing our passion with the local community.”

Bedfordshire Swift Group is affiliated to the Bedfordshire Natural History Society. They aim to provide education on swifts across the county, encourage local people to take an active interest in their local swifts, and work to provide more nesting opportunities by putting up nest boxes.
