Mulberry Homes shares top tips for creating a pet friendly home
April 3rd, 2025

At Mulberry Homes we know that pets are a part of the family, so your home has to be just as perfect for them as it is for the humans who will be living there. With this in mind, we’ve put together some tips on how to make sure your home is the perfect haven for your beloved companions.

Create window perches

Both cats and dogs love watching what goes on outside, so creating a cosy space where they can enjoy some easy enrichment is a must. This can come in the form of hanging window seats for cats, built in benches for dogs, or even just positioning the sofa so that your pet can see the outside world from their preferred spot. For cats in particular you can keep their interest by placing a bird feeder close to the chosen window to engage their brains.

Establish spaces to play

Whilst you may not want your pets to run rampant all over the house, it is important that they have somewhere they can let off their zoomies and play until their hearts content. For dogs that space may be the garden, so it may be worth including some coverage for rainy weather. For cats that may be upward space, such as cat ladders and shelves away from any ornaments that can be knocked off, so they can chase toys or lasers will full vigour. For smaller pets like hamsters, it may be a space where they can roam outside of their cage away from any small spaces they could escape into or floor-based hazards such as wires.

Ensure your home is toxin free

Obviously having a pet friendly space involves making sure that the space does not contain things that are harmful to your pet. Most people are aware of what human food their pets should not consume and therefore keep it out of reach, however some home décor such as indoor plants can also be a significant hazard. Plants such as lilies, tulips and azaleas are all poisonous to cats and dogs, so be sure to double check if any plants you want to liven up your space are safe.

Choose pet-resistant décor

Pets don’t have to mean mess. Simply making some careful choices when decorating your home can keep it looking pristine no matter how hard your pets play, sleep or shed around your home. Flooring options that resist scratches and are easy to clean any spills off include tile, sealed hardwood and high-quality vinyl. Sofas can be selected in scratch resident fabrics, and pet beds and blankets in cotton and linen are durable and easy to wash.

Keep your style in mind

Having a pet friendly home doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your interior design vision. There are plenty of options for stylish pet furniture that provide what your pet needs without compromising the aesthetic you have created. From stylish beds that can be wall mounted, built into existing furniture or simply chosen in complementary colours and fabrics, to feeding stations that match the kitchen seamlessly, there’s no limit to ways you can add style to your pet friendly features.
