Thursday 20th March marks the official start of UK springtime, and to help welcome the new season luxury homebuilder Mulberry Homes has enlisted the expertise of Home Style Essex, which offers professional decluttering and organisation services.
Emma Redwood and Carly MacFarlane, both working mums of two, started Home Style Essex in 2020. After years of perfecting their own homes, and helping family and friends, they decided to turn their passion into a business which now offers a wide range of services across Essex and the surrounding areas, including organising new homes for buyers who want to get off to a good start, staging homes for those looking to sell their home, helping with the moving process, providing services for small businesses and more.
The pair shared some of their best tips for tackling the big spring clean.
1. Create your spring cleaning checklist
“Spring cleaning can seem daunting, and it can be tricky to know where to start. We recommend writing a checklist to beat the overwhelm. Not only does a checklist keep you focused, but every time you check something off your list this will give you the motivation to keep going. Our best advice is to break your checklist down into rooms, i.e. kitchen, living room, bathroom etc.”
2. Declutter first – less is more
“The average British household owns up to 50 per cent more items than they actually need or use. Clutter only gathers dust and creates more housework for you to do each week. To cut your cleaning time down and to make life feel simpler, declutter! Not only will your home feel tidier and calmer, but it will also boost your mood and productivity too. The items you’ve decluttered don’t have to end up in landfill, instead you can look online for advice on ways to recycle what you don’t need anymore.”
3. Organise with style
“Now you’ve written your checklist and decluttered your home, it’s time to organise. Did you know that decluttering in the kitchen not only looks beautiful, but can save you money and time too. With clearer visibility in your cupboards, you can see what you have and what you need. This ensures you don’t over buy on the food shop and your cupboards can stay organised. The same goes for your drawers and wardrobes, if everything has a place and is organised, you’ll find putting your laundry away a breeze. No more washing piles of doom dumped around the house.”
4. Start with the hall and work back
“Once you have decluttered and organised, it’s spring cleaning time. Your checklist will be your best friend here as you’ve already separated it by rooms, so pick a room and start there. It really is that simple. We like to start with the entry hall, as this is where guests create their first impressions of your home, then simply work your way around the home one room at a time.”
5. Make it a family affair
“Why should you be the only one worrying about the spring cleaning? Everybody in the household can get involved in this process, including the kids. Refer back to your checklist and give age-appropriate jobs to your children and make it a fun family activity. You can put on your favourite music, set timers and see how much you can tick off as a team. Not only does this lighten the load, but it also teaches children important life skills about responsibility and teamwork.
“Spring cleaning doesn’t have to be a chore; it can be an experience that brings you joy and tranquillity. Having a tidy and clean home is known to improve your mental health and general wellbeing. Following these five tips will bring you a calm, tidy and easy to maintain home, so good luck with your spring clean and remember better living starts at home.”
